Skincare Tips for Autumn

Autumn is here, which means that the weather is getting colder. Unfortunately, that also means your skin may also become drier as it loses its ability to retain moisture. Below are five tips to help prepare your skin for the autumn season. 

 

 

1. Stay Moisturized

If your skin starts to feel dry and tight, it means you may not be moisturizing enough or using the wrong product. Our Gentle Skin Moisturizer is made for sensitive, dry, or oily skin. Use the right moisturizer for your skin type twice daily, after washing your face. Cutting back on exfoliating can also help skin retain its moisture. 

2. Beware of Dry Air

New York City dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engelman, M.D. explains that "dry skin occurs when the environment strips away your skin's natural layer of fatty oils, leaving it unable to hold onto moisture. And as the temperature drops, so do humidity levels, further predisposing you to dryness." Because of the cooler weather, your heater may be on more frequently. "Heat zaps moisture from the air," says Dr. Engelman. Exposing your skin to artificial heat can dry out and damage skin. Using a humidifier can help boost hydration as it prevents the air in your home from becoming too dry. 

3. Avoid Hot Water

When its chilly outside, there's nothing more relaxing than soaking in a hot bath or taking a hot shower. But doing so can cause skin to dry out and prevent the formation of natural oils. Skin can then become inflamed and aggravated. Hot water can worsen skin conditions like eczema and rosacea. It's best to use lukewarm water when bathing. 4. Don't forget SPF

Just because it's autumn, doesn't mean the sun won't be around. 5. Drink Plenty of Water

It's important to stay hydrated during colder weather, especially after or during physical activities. It's easy to forget to drink water and replenish fluids when it's cold out, because you normally feel more thirsty when it's warm. Drinking water before you feel thirsty can prevent you from getting dehydrated. Don't rely on thirst to let you know when you need to drink water.
