Nothing says teenage years like worrying about tests, who likes you, and if you’re invited to that party on Friday. You don’t need to add the worries of acne, dry skin, or other teen skin care issues! We are here to help with several tips for proper teen skin care.
Famous Sweet Valley High series author Francine Pascal stated it best, “No matter when you were born or where, puberty is the same. It's the same for your parents as it is for you—what's happening in your body dictates everything.”
You are in a tumultuous time, and it is hard to figure out your skin. You and your friends may be going through puberty together, but they don’t have the same skin as you. So, your BFF’s teen skin care routine might not work for your face. Find out why and how to bring a natural glow to your skin with our tips.
Know your Skin Type
The first step in preventing acne or dry skin and establishing your teen skin care is to know and understand your skin type. One of the easiest ways to do this is the “blot test.” In the morning, take a tissue and lay it covering your whole face. Press the tissue onto your skin and then remove to see what appears on the tissue.
There are five basic skin types revealed by this test:
- Sensitive – Little or no oil left on the paper, sometimes accompanied by tight, red skin
- Normal – No oil on tissue with plump, glowing skin
- Oily – Traces of oil, usually on the nose, forehead, and chin areas with shiny or sticky spots leftover
- Combination – Traces of oil on only 1-2 areas of your face (this is the most popular skin type)
- Dry – No oil present, and your skin will be flaky, dry, and tight feeling
Each skin type requires different teen skin care products, but the tips below are for any skin type.
Skin Care Daily Routine
The first step in your teen skin care routine to prevent acne, dry skin, or other issues is to have a daily routine. You should include all of these steps in your regimen to have healthy-looking skin.
- Cleanse – You should cleanse your face at least once a day (but we recommend twice—when you wake up and before you go to bed) to clear impurities and keep the skin hydrated. Use a gentle, hypoallergenic wash that works for your skin type.
- Remove Makeup Daily – Makeup enhances your beauty, but it can also contribute to pesky skin issues like acne and dry skin. Make sure that you take it off every night before going to bed. Your future self will love you for it.
- Moisturize – After you remove your makeup and cleanse your skin, you should apply a moisturizer that fits your skin type and teen skin care Moisturizer is not just for dry skin; all skin needs some love after cleansing. If you have oily or dry skin, our Kids Calming Moisturizer will do the trick. If you have sensitive, normal, or combination skin, you should try our Gentle Skin Moisturizer.
- Control Oil – You can control oil by using an oil-free primer, translucent powder, or by blotting oil throughout the day. Like the blot test above, you would use a tissue to blot oil off your face whenever you get too shiny.
- Sunscreen – Using a daily sunscreen is one of the most critical steps in preserving your skin in the short and long term. The harsh UVA/UVB rays dry and damage your skin. You can burn, get blisters, or even develop skin cancer if you spend too much unprotected time in the sun. Plus, these harmful rays create age spots and wrinkles later in life. Add this step to your teen skin care NOW!
- Lip Balm – Make sure to protect and moisturize those lips of yours. By adding a moisture-rich lip balm to your daily teen skin care routine, you will have plump-looking lips for years.
Frequent Treatments to Add to Your Teen Skin Care Routine
Besides your daily routine, you should occasionally add an exfoliant and mask to your teen skin care regimen. Depending on your skin type, exfoliate once to twice a week to scrub away dead skin and particles that clog your pores. Choose a face mask for your skin type to either moisturize (dry skin), soothe (sensitive or dry skin), clarify (oily skin), or nourish (combo or normal skin). Do a face mask treatment once a week at the most. Might we suggest a weekend spa night with your besties?
What Happens if You Breakout!?!
The inevitable will happen: you will, at some point in puberty, develop acne and pimples. Don’t panic! Remember, your mom, dad, and every insta influencer got them at some point, too! You just need to know how to treat them.

Other Tips for Teen Skin Care
Besides understanding your skin type and implementing a daily routine to match that, you should keep in mind a few more tips to prevent acne and dry skin during your teen skin care routine.
- Don’t Share Makeup – This can cause cross-contamination between users.
- Wash Hands Often – On average, a person touches their face 23 times. Keep those hands clean!
- Reconsider Hair Products – If you break out around your scalp or where your hair is touching your face or neck, change your hair products to see a change.
- Avoid Tanning Beds – Not only are the tanning oils and lotions bad for your skin, but the UVA rays also damage your skin in the short and long term.
- See a Doctor – If you see some unusual spots or have frequent breakouts that you cannot manage, have an adult help you make an appointment with a dermatologist.

“Confidence is the most beautiful thing you can possess.” – Sabrina Carpenter
Everyone goes through puberty and struggles with how they look. Beauty is really in the eye of the beholder. If you are confident about who you are, what happens on the outside should not matter. Confidence and beauty grow from within yourself. If you glow from the inside, you will glow on the outside. Be you—Be beautiful.
